Henry- the main character of the story. The whole book is basically based in his head. he is a farm boy that decided to enlist one day.
Jim- referred to as the tall soldier. He is the one that runs wildly then dies.
Wilson- he is a good friend of henry. henry thought he died and then he finds him later in the book. When henry finds wilson it brings him courage and hope.
lieutenant- The leader of henrys brigade. not many people think he is doing a very good as his job since they keep losing men and battles.
tattered soldier- a soldier with many battle wounds that finds henry and witnesses jims death too. henry gets mad when he keeps asking him about his wounds so henry leaves.
Mother- you dont see much of henrys mom just in the beginning really. She lives with henry on a farm does much of the work on the farm. She is sad to see henry leave just like any other mother would be.
